What a Salesforce Health Check Doesn't Tell You

A Salesforce Health Check does one thing very well: it tells you how closely your security settings match a defined baseline, expressed as a score from 0 to 100.
What it doesn't tell you is how well the rest of your Salesforce org is built.
It doesn't assess your data model, automation, Apex, integrations, permissions architecture, or readiness for AI agents. That means an org can have an excellent Health Check score and still be difficult to maintain, expensive to change, or not yet ready for what's next.
What does a Salesforce Health Check measure?
Salesforce Health Check compares your org's security settings with the Salesforce Baseline Standard or a custom baseline you define. The result is a score from 0 to 100.
The check covers settings such as password policies, session timeouts, certificate handling, login access, clickjack protection, and CORS. Each setting is weighted according to its security importance.
It's free, built into Salesforce Setup, and updates when you change the relevant settings. As a security check, it's genuinely useful. Every Salesforce admin should know where their org stands.
The important distinction is what the score actually represents.
A Health Check tells you whether your security configuration matches a baseline. It doesn't tell you whether the org itself is well designed.
What does the Salesforce Health Check score leave out?
Quite a lot.
Anything that isn't a security setting is outside the scope of the Health Check. That includes the way your data model has evolved, how your automations interact, whether your Apex is maintainable, or whether your permissions have become difficult to manage over time.
It also doesn't tell you whether your Salesforce org is ready for AI.

This distinction matters because most Salesforce complexity doesn't come from a single security setting. It builds up over years as new requirements, projects, teams, and integrations are added to the org.
Why can a high Health Check score still hide deeper complexity?
Because the Health Check is measuring configuration against a baseline. It isn't assessing the architecture that has grown around that configuration.
Salesforce orgs rarely get redesigned from scratch. They evolve.
A Flow gets added to solve a business requirement. A few years later, another Flow handles a similar process. A permission is widened to get a project over the line. An object created for a short-term initiative becomes part of the permanent data model. Fields accumulate. Integrations multiply.
None of this necessarily affects the Health Check score.
But it can have a major impact on how easy the org is to understand, change, and extend.
That's especially relevant when you're planning a major transformation or introducing AI. Before an AI agent can safely work with your Salesforce data and processes, you need to know what it's actually working with: which data is reliable, which automation still matters, who has access to what, and where the technical dependencies are.
A 95 or 100 on the Health Check doesn't answer those questions.

When should you run a Salesforce Health Check?
Keep the Salesforce Health Check running continuously. It's free, available directly in Setup, and gives you a useful view of your security configuration.
A broader platform assessment makes more sense when you're facing a significant change, such as:
- a Salesforce data migration
- an AI agent rollout
- a merger or acquisition
- a major transformation programme
- a new team taking over an existing org
- a large-scale automation or architecture change
You don't need to "pass" a Platform Assessment. Its purpose is to give you a realistic picture of the org before you make the next big move.
